A single column, cast in a single pour. The surface is scraped, never polished — a refusal of mirror, a preference for the hand.
The aluminum standard for Obelus is poured in one continuous casting at the Beolgyo foundry in South Jeolla, using a method adapted from the founding of Korean Buddha-bells. The metal is brought to its pour temperature once and emptied into the mould without interruption. There is one chance only.
After cooling, the standard is scraped — never polished — by hand with a steel cabinet-maker's tool. The marks remain visible. Each is the record of a single pass; we do not erase them. They are the surface, not a defect of it.
The shade is woven from undyed Belgian linen on a Jacquard loom in Kortrijk, then drawn over a hidden brass armature in the Seoul atelier. The seam is tucked inside; from any angle, it cannot be seen. The light passing through reads warm against the cool grey of the metal.
Obelus is offered in a numbered edition of fourteen. It is intended for the corner of a quiet room. It does not announce itself. At dusk, lit, it is the room.
